Excessive agroforestry biomass in Spain

In the last study he has done ence, it is indicated that in Spain there is a large quantity of surplus biomass that is not used, and that it would allow the installation of new 10,2 GWs to generate firm and renewable electricity, and heat for the industry. Their use would also make it possible to eliminate bad practices that are highly damaging to the environment, such as the burning of agricultural stubbles and the lack of cleanliness in the forests, which is the main cause of forest fires.

The estimation to determine the surplus biomass has been carried out fulfilling the criteria of its dEcology for the sustainability of biomass as a fuel, that guarantees a respectful use with the environment, as well as with other priority uses of the biomass. In this sense, the study carried out contemplates the following limitations to ensure the sustainable and responsible management of biomass:

  • Ensuring that the soil does not lose nutrients,
  • Not using wood of more than 10 cm in diameter
  • Prioritizing the use of biomass for livestock feed.
  • Limiting the collection distance of the biomass to minimize the carbon footprint.
