The European associations of the thermal energy production industry -Solar Heat Europe, the European Geothermal Energy Council and the European Biomass Association (AEBIOM) - have issued a joint statement in which, roughly, they positively value -with nuances- the proposed Directive of Renewable Energies that the European Parliament has just approved. The approved text establishes as Objective that the 35% of energy consumed by the European Union in 2030 from renewable sources

The renewable thermal objective included in this proposal is for the European Union to increase its renewable thermal quota by an annual 2% until achieving, in the 2030 year, approximately 35% of the total heat, cold and sanitary hot water generated thanks to renewable sources, that is, the biomass, geothermal and solar thermal.

The associations that signed the statement regret, however, that the proposal does not include binding targets that do not help to dispel the uncertainty surrounding thermal renewables. They also encourage the Council and the Commission to align themselves with the text approved by Parliament and thus to tune in with the Paris Agreement, and call on the public to lead the energy transition "in safer, warmer and healthier homes; in more efficient businesses; and in cleaner industries.
