The award aims to highlight the constant work towards sustainability and maintenance of forest masses, which consolidates Ence - Energía y Celulosa SA, as a leader in the research and development of best practices for their improvement.
The leadership of Ence in energy production from biomass in Spain is unquestionable; With the AVEBIOM award we want to recognize the pioneering nature of the company in the certification of the environmental sustainability of the biomass it uses through the European SURE system. Its responsible and sustainable management of agroforestry resources is, without a doubt, an example to follow.
1,6 million tons of biomass used to generate renewable energy in 2022
Ence It has more than 1.300 employees, whose work positions the company as a leader in Europe in the eucalyptus pulp sector and in the generation of renewable energy with biomass in Spain, where it achieved a production in 2022 of 2.321,1 GWh.
Ence manages more than 66.000 hectares of forest mass in Spain, of which 22% is dedicated exclusively to the protection and conservation of ecosystems. Its forest assets are 83% certified with some of the most advanced international standards in forest management and traceability and chain of custody, such as PEFC and FSC®. The biomass used for energy production has been certified under the European system SURE which guarantees the highest standards of environmental sustainability required by the EU.
In 2022, Ence produced renewable energy using more than 1,6 million tons of biomass, considerably reducing the amount of fuel from forest masses, which is probably the best forest fire prevention system in Spain.
Magnon Green Energy, the renewable energy subsidiary of Ence and associated with AVEBIOM, is the first Spanish company in the production of renewable energy with biomass. It has a total generation capacity of 266 MW in its eight power plants: three in Huelva, two in Ciudad Real, one in Córdoba, one in Jaén and one in Mérida. These are electricity generation plants that are powered exclusively by biomass of agroforestry origin from nearby environments, which contributes to the reduction of burning of the excess byproduct and the reactivation of the economy in rural areas.
On the other hand, in Ence's pulp biofactories, in Pontevedra and Navia, 112 MW are generated through its sustainable generation and cogeneration plants that ensure the energy self-sufficiency of these facilities.
It has currently launched new business initiatives linked to the forestry and bioenergy sector such as Ence Biogas and Ence Terra.
Thirteen winners precede Ence
AVEBIOM recognizes the contribution of relevant entities or people to the sustainable development of biomass for energy use since 2010.
In previous editions have received the 'Fomenta la Bioenergía' award el City Council of Tarrasa (2010) Representative (2011), the Energy Agency of Andalusia (2012), the Junta de Castilla and Leon (2013), the Office of Climate Change of the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment (2014), the Xunta de Galicia (2015), the public company Nasuvinsa-Navarra of Land and Housing (2016), the University of Valladolid (2017), the Give-Ciemat (2018), the Basque Energy Agency (2019) Christian rakos, president of the WBA (2020), organizations FSC y PEFC (2021)and the Badajoz Provincial Council (2022)
The award ceremony will take place at the beginning of 2024 in Valladolid, coinciding with the celebration of the 20th anniversary of the association, in an event in which politicians, businessmen, scientists and representatives of society who have maintained some type of relationship with AVEBIOM during these 20 years.
