The Spanish forestry sector wants Forests to be a really effective instrument to mitigate the effects of climate change, as was evident in the conference held last Wednesday at the Spanish Engineering Institute, entitled “Forests for Climate”.

Esperanza Orellana Moraleda, Director General of Rural Development and Forest Policy, stressed the importance of forests for their absorption capacity regardless of the accounting system adopted, and noted the interest to use forest products as a substitute material for fossil fuels , since as a whole they contribute to the decarbonization of the economy.

In this sense, Jose Manuel Jaquotot, Deputy Director General of Forestry and Forestry, indicated the opportunity to contribute effectively in a new model of development based on the bioeconomy since "the bioeconomy will not exist without the forests".

Eduardo Rojas Briales, Dean of the Official College of Forestry Engineers and Representative of Together for Forests, said "if we do not include forests actively, we will not be able to overcome the challenge of climate change".

During the seminar, the carbon emissions accounting system and the emissions associated with large forest fires were analyzed, as well as the importance of both carbon sinks and the substitution of fossil fuels for biomass, both to do "things right" and to achieve the objectives of decarbonization of the economy.
