Solutions and strategies for emissions in the pellet sector

Exit of a stove and pellets

Currently, emissions are one of the fundamental challenges of the pellet sector. Within the framework of the World Sustainable Energy Days conference, which was held in the Austrian town of Wels from the 27 from February to the 1 of March of 2019, Several companies showed their solutions and advanced strategies.

Stefan Ortner, of ÖkoFEN, has presented the efficient Smart models, condensation equipment and hybridization of biomass with other renewable energies.

Among the most surprising current technologies is a Windhager gasification boiler for the domestic sphere that, using "bad" biomass, generates emissions well below the limits established by current legislation. This boiler was developed within the framework of the Flexifuel CHX European project with partners such as BIOS and CIEMAT.

El BIOFLEX project has obtained good results in terms of emissions in boilers that use pellets made from different raw materials.

At German Center for Biomass Research (DBFZ), where tests are carried out with pellets of 4 mm in "ultra small" boilers, adapted to the new concepts of buildings with almost zero energy consumption and an exhaustive control of emissions.

Marco Palazzetti recommends against the need to reduce emissions, always keep in mind the "4B" rule: Good fuel, Good stove or boiler, Good installation and maintenance and Good practices.

The current situation indicates to the sector that it is necessary to control the way in which emission inventories are carried out, since sometimes it relies on erroneous calculations. As an example, it happened in Holland where it was believed that the particle emissions came from an 40% of the biomass and then, after reviewing factors and calculations, the contribution was reduced to 8%.
