Bio-CHP produces ethanol with 90% less GHG

Biorefinery

The Lantmännen Agroetanol plant, the Sweden's largest ethanol producer, he is able to produce ethanol reducing up to 90% the generation of greenhouse gases. He is able to do it because a biomass cogeneration plant It supplies the energy necessary for the ethanol plant to function. In addition to ethanol, the plant also produces protein and "green carbon dioxide" feed, which makes it a perfect example of what specialists call "the concept of biorefinery", an installation that integrates biomass conversion processes and equipment to produce fuels, energy, heat, and biomass value-added materials.

The ethanol plant and the CHP are located in Händelö, an island just outside Norrköping on the Baltic coast of Sweden. The heat generated is introduced to the heat network Norrköping, a city with more than 100.000 inhabitants. The fuels used to operate this unit are mainly wood chips, recycled wood and other types of biomass. This means that fossil fuels are not used, all electricity is renewable.

Following the success story of Lantmännen Agroetanol, other initiatives are being born throughout Europe to adapt and extend the concept of biorefinery to local needs and raw materials to make optimal use of its resources.
