The Leonese architect Francisco Valbuena, director of the Technical Unit of Architecture of the University of Valladolid, in which three architects work, has managed to build the most sustainable building in Europe. The University Shuttle of Applied Research Centers (Lucia), in Valladolid, has the most sustainable certificate in Europe and the second in the world with 98 points. It is the highest Leed Platinum score in all of Europe and the entire Northern Hemisphere, including the United States The PIXEL building in Australia is the one that has scored the most in the Leed certification in the world with 105 points on 110.

The new projects on the Valladolid and Soria campus, still under construction, are already winning sustainability awards "something that is rare because the awards are usually granted when they are finished and they are shown to be sustainable". The new buildings are the IndUVa classroom tower, the integral reform of the old Faculty of Sciences for the Mergelina headquarters of the School of Industrial Engineering in Valladolid and the I + D building for the Duques de Soria Campus in Soria.

The system of certification of sustainability of buildings Leed, managed by the Usgbc (United States Green Building Council) is the one of greater world-wide recognition, with 92 real estate certified in Spain and more of 37.000 in the whole world.
